On the 25th of May 2021, RETECH Foundation (RF) launched 20 RETECH Foundation Book Clubs (RFBCs) at the University of Benin Demonstration Secondary School (UDSS) in collaboration with Books2Africa, GC IMC and UDSS Benin Alumni.
The 20 RFBCs are made up of 160 Senior Secondary School students with each club having a total of 8 members. The RFBC aims at encouraging critical thinking and deeper engagement with stories whilst improving the students reading and reading comprehension skills.
A total of 160 books, mostly written by Nigerian authors such as Chinua Achebe & Chimamanda Adichie, were distributed with each student getting a book. We are pleased to have supplied 8 copies of a book titled ‘When I grow up’ written by Patricia Asadegbegba, an alumna of UDSS Benin.
By setting up book clubs rather than just supplying books to schools, RF can monitor and evaluate the performance of our clubs and can ensure that the books we supply are read. By awarding prizes to the student who has read the most books and to the club who has met the most, we encourage our club members to read the books we supply and to meet as a group to review the books read. We also encourage club members to rotate books between the clubs monthly to ensure the programme is sustainable.
Special thanks to Books2Africa, GC IMC and to all the UDSS Benin Alumni who funded this Initiative.
